A consultant psychiatrist Dr Vincent Udenze has raised the alarm over the increasing dependence of youths in Nigeria on hard drugs to assist them face the harsh realities of life.
The UK-based doctor and president of Reconnect noted that his organisation, a group founded to increase awareness on mental health, has written President Muhammadu Buhari in attempts to get public support to remove stigma associated with mental health. During its awareness dinner in Abuja, Reconnect focused on mental health for young people exposed to genetic and social factors that lead to depression or drug dependence for which stigma prevents them from getting help.
Udenze said: “You cannot be creating jobs for the youths without making sure the youths are fine. “We have realized that youths are wasting away, unable to retain their jobs, struggling because they are dependent on drugs,” he said.
