Falsified anti-malarial medicine circulating in West Africa

The Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone as part of its legal mandate to ensure that only good quality, safe and efficacious medicines and other regulated products are on the Sierra Leone market, hereby informs the general public that a falsified anti-malarial medicine has been circulating in West Africa and the Board wishes to inform the general public that the under mentioned batches of Arthemether/Lumefantrine are fake and contains none of the correct active pharmaceutical ingredients. The World Health Organization has also confirmed this product to be fake.

  • Product: Artemether/Lumefantrine
  • Batch Number: DY1402542
  • Manufacturing Date: 07/2013
  • Expiry Date: 06/2016

The outer (Secondary) packaging bears the batch number DY1402542 and the blister (Primary) packaging containing the tablets bears the batch number DY1402201.

Other boxes of the same Artemether/Lumefantrine product were also discovered with the following information:

  • Product: Artemether/Lumefantrine
  • Batch Number: DY1402542
  • Manufacturing Date: 07/2013
  • Expiry Date: 06/2016

But in the above case, whilst the outer bulk (tertiary) packaging bears the batch number DY1402541 the outer individual packs (secondary) packaging bear the batch number DY1402542 and the blister (primary) packaging containing the tablets bear the batch number DY1402201.

All the three levels of packaging of the falsified anti-malarial medicine (Artemether/Lumefantrine) bear the ACTm green leaf logo of the Affordable Medicines Facility-malaria programme. The packaging is in English.

The Pharmacy Board requests increase vigilance from the general public for this falsified product and to forward all products containing the above mentioned batches to the Board for further regulatory action.pic-1_017
